Hey Forney
Always in season somewhere

Forney Seasonal Radar

Four local traditions, one page, all year. Whatever the calendar says, one of these is lighting up. Right now it says: check the fireworks rules before you light anything.

๐ŸŽ† Fireworks Finder

In season June 24 to July 4, and December 20 to January 1

The one rule that matters: fireworks are illegal inside Forney city limits. The city lists fireworks flat-out under "Illegal" in its code compliance rules, right next to discharging a firearm. Source: City of Forney

And the line does not stop at the city sign. Texas lets cities enforce their fireworks ordinances up to 5,000 feet beyond city limits, so "just past the edge of town" is usually still a no. Source: Kaufman County Fire Marshal

Where it IS legal

  • Unincorporated Kaufman County, on private property with the owner's permission. The county's rule of thumb: if outdoor burning is allowed, fireworks are generally allowed too. During drought, the commissioners court can restrict them, so check the county burn line at 469-595-8899 before you buy. Source: Kaufman County
  • The Constable's office puts it plainly: you are allowed to pop fireworks if you live outside the city limits of Forney, on your driveway or your own property, never in the street. Most HOAs prohibit them even where the county allows them, so check your HOA first. Source: Kaufman County Constable Pct 2

Why the stands sit where they sit

  • Sellers need a license from the Texas State Fire Marshal plus a Kaufman County permit, and they cannot sell on highways, sidewalks, or public property, or out of a tent, boat, or vehicle. That is why the legit stands are permanent-looking structures on private land along county roads outside city limits. Source: Kaufman County
  • Any public fireworks display in the unincorporated county needs a permit from the County Fire Marshal. Source: Kaufman County
  • State law also bans igniting fireworks within 600 feet of a church, hospital, or school. Source: Texas Occupations Code 2154.251, via Kaufman County

If you do light them (legally), the county's safety basics

  • Set a safe perimeter and keep kids, pets, and spectators outside it
  • Keep a bucket of water or a charged hose right there
  • Light one at a time, never modify a firework, and skip the alcohol
  • A dud is still live: wait 5 to 10 minutes, then drown it in water, never relight
  • Soak all debris in water for a few hours before it goes in the trash
  • And a local note: July 4th is one of the biggest nights for pets going missing, so bring them inside early
