Freestanding ER vs full hospital: what's the difference?
A freestanding ER (like the one on US 80 in Forney) is a real emergency room with ER doctors, imaging, and labs, open 24 hours. It is built to stabilize serious emergencies fast. But it is not attached to a hospital, so if you need surgery, an ICU, or to be admitted overnight, you will be transferred to a full hospital afterward.
A full-service hospital (like BSW Sunnyvale) has an ER plus operating rooms, inpatient beds, and specialists in the same building, so everything can happen in one place.
One thing to know about billing: freestanding ERs bill at emergency-room rates, which are much higher than urgent care rates, even for minor issues. For a true emergency, go to the nearest ER, period. For something minor like a sore throat or a simple sprain, an urgent care clinic is usually far cheaper. When in doubt about a serious symptom, do not gamble, call 911.
