Urgent care or ER? A quick local rule
If it is life threatening, call 911. Chest pain, trouble breathing, a serious head injury, or heavy bleeding means the emergency room, not a clinic.
For everything else, urgent care usually gets you in faster and costs a lot less. Fevers, ear infections, sprains, stitches, flu tests, and school or sports physicals are all urgent care territory. One thing worth knowing: a freestanding ER looks like a clinic from the road but bills like a hospital ER. Check the sign before you walk in so the bill does not surprise you.
